Call the Friendship Line toll-free at (800) 971-0016

The Friendship Line, a phone counseling and outreach program, is open to adults 60 and over.  This   service is free of charge and is a 24-hour crisis and support line for seniors needing to talk for any reason.  The Friendship Line is a service of the National Institute on Aging, Center for Elderly Suicide Prevention and provides compassionate counseling, assessment and crisis intervention.

We know that mental health and addictive disorder prevention and treatment works for all ages, and to restrict services to older adults is not acceptable! We must advocate on their behalf.

 Aging Priorities

Primary Focus:   Goal 3 – Disparities in mental health services are eliminated

Education about senior mental health and addictions, and the reduction of stigma and ageism to be

achieved through campaigns and the development of a training resource bureau.

§         Education campaign – about senior mental health/addictions for seniors                                                                                          …………………….for the community

                                                                        .…..………………….for professionals

§         Campaign for the reduction of stigma, through education, targeting the community,          seniors and professionals

§         Campaign for the reduction of ageism (defined as the stigma attached to aging), through education, targeting the community, seniors and professionals

§         Trainings that are age appropriate and culturally competent

§         Promote and/or design cross training of professionals and volunteers

§         Research training opportunities currently available and develop a resource bureau

Focus on intergenerational Systems of Care – wrap around services for seniors- advocate for    inclusion of seniors in current Systems of Care programs

Advocate/design/promote a centralized (no wrong door) system to access services including, but            not limited to Helpline/Suicide hotline/Gambling hotline/211/AAA Information & Assistance

Noteworthy - Simplify and clarify insurance system(s) of Medicare, Medicaid,                                          Advantage, private pay, different levels of professional credentialing requirements to bill                                     for services.  Committee recommends this as a priority, but suggests delaying action until                       anticipated health reform initiatives occur.
